Back at it this week after a much needed break full of rest, friends, family, and food! We've been loving these really cold (more like average) temperatures this Winter compared to the past 4 Winters. The colder weather helps control bugs, plant pathogens, and severe storms. We really like when the weather is cold so we do not get those HUGE snow storms.
But the cold weather also makes farming in the Winter more difficult. So there is a trade off. We currently have lettuce, bok choy, tot soi, kale, and spinach growing in our protected tunnels. These growing tunnels are not heated, but the crops have large frost blankets over top of them to help them manage the extreme cold. Plus these crops have evolved to produce more sugar naturally to survive cold nights. Think of the natural sugars in these crops as natures antifreeze, because more sugar means a lower freezing temperature. Nature is Wild!
So here we are in 2026 waiting for the next thaw so we can harvest for our next Winter Share. It looks like Tuesday and Wednesday this week will be perfect timing!
This week's share will include potatoes, carrots, beets, bok choy, tot soi, squashes, celeriac, radishes, turnips, cabbage, onions, kale, radicchio, lettuce, butternut, and more!
PLUS!! Emily from Savage Wheat will be here slinging her bakes made from ancient grains and natural ingredients. Bring your questions with you ;) See you then
