Summer Share #7- 7/21+7/23: Smokey Days

1 min read

I love it when people, usually newscasters and meteorologists, say that the smoke from Canadian wildfires is bad and that everyone should stay inside. There are people who make a living outside (including but not limited to farmers), and there is nothing in place to make sure that during these type of events you can still make a paycheck and also stay inside. There are no protections, and in fact the legislature is going in the wrong direction to protect our environment and therefore the health of every human being.

That being said, crops are generally grown outside, as they should be. And animals are outside breathing in the smoke as well. As this event will most definitely continue throughout the Summer, we will have to make due. And as a side note, the sun is not out when the smoke fills the sky. And that alone affects crops, too.

But hopefully the collective 'we' can keep rolling along and that the Summer fruiting crops will continue to grow and bloom into abundant Summer vegetables.

As for this week the share will include squashes, cucumbers, carrots, beets, salad turnips, fresh onions, kale, chard, kohlrabi, fennel, scallions, head lettuce, cabbage, and the first of the tomatoes maybe??

The fruit share will be cherries and yellow plums
