There are a lot of new beginnings this week including the start of the Winter Share and the start of our cold season. We are excited it has now frosted 3 mornings in a row. Though it means an and to any Summer heat loving crops that cannot tolerate temps under 32, it means the crops that like cooler temps are hitting their stride. Cold weather crops actually get tastier after frosts as they use natural sugars as a defense against frosts and freezes. Nature is a mad scientist!
We are also starting share pick ups as every other week per the Winter Share schedule. The schedule will always be in the reminder emails we send out to Winter Share members, on this blog page, on the Winter Share tab on the website AND in the share room at every pick up.
If you are in the Winter Share and have not paid, please bring your payment with you to your first share pick up ($280 cash or check). We still have Root Down Farm reusable cotton bags available for purchase in the share room for $10.
We are up against the clock this time of year, trying to get everything (think storage carrots, rutabagas, parsnips, potatoes, beets, etc., etc.) out of the ground before the earth decides it's time to sleep for the Winter. We are also up against shorter daylight. We are rapidly approaching the shortest day of the year (December 21st), and every day leading up to then is shorter and shorter.
As for the share this week, it will be a mix of Summer, Fall, and Winter veggies. We were aware of the frosts a couple days before they hit so we harvested all the Summer crops we could.
The first Winter Share will include Sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, carrots, salad radishes and turnips, potatoes, onions, squashes, spinach, bok choy, kohlrabi, cabbage, fennel, radicchio, peppers, lettuce, scallions, and bunched greens.
The next Winter Share pick up is November 5th and 7th.
