We are currently on the cusp of the Summer crops entering the share mix. The corn is filling out the first ears, the peppers are getting plump, the melons are starting to show through the leaves, and the eggplant is..well...not really cooperating this season (but we'll still have it once it gets it's act together!).
This season has been filled with all kinds of weather warnings, from an almost 100 degree heat index to literal tornadoes touching down. Anytime people are warned to stay inside, whether it be heat, or polluted air, or high winds, or even tornadoes, you have to remember the plants have to live through it outside. They cannot take cover. So if you are wondering if all the rain is good, just think about how many times you've sought refuge inside anywhere. The plants are survivors. They are given nutrients via the soil (and amendments we apply like compost), the rain, and the sun. And if they are healthy enough they will take sunshine and turn it into food for us. What a time to be alive.
This week's share will (hopefully) include: potatoes, squash, cucumbers, onions, beets, carrots, cabbage, fennel, radicchio, bok choy, kohlrabi, kale, chard, head lettuce, peppers, and hopefully tomatoes (fingers crossed)
The fruit share will include cherries, apricots, plums, and peaches
