We are ready to start the next week of the share and were hoping that the rain would stop. And it looks like it will this week! Accompanied by a week full of 90 degree weather. What a ride! Yes there has been too much rain, like way too much rain. Some crops located in certain areas of thee field have suffered or just died from all the rain (not to mention the wind storms we've had, too). So some crops are looking quite battered, but with less rain potentially we can try and take care of them a bit :)
We're thinking this warmth will bring on some rapid growth of both crops and weeds, and maybe even bugs. But that's July. It's quite a bear of a month for farmers on our region. When I was young it used to be one of my favorite months. It isn't any more.
But more and more crops are coming into their own, so the share will continue to have more variety. And if you are overwhelmed by leafy green things you should savor them now, because they do not like hot weather. They will be disappearing from the share as the summer progresses.
This week's share will include radishes, turnips, broccoli, zucchini and summer squash, beets, kohlrabi, carrots, bok choy, scallions, cabbage, bunched greens, head lettuce, and spinach.
The Fruit Share will start next week, not this week, we think. We will email everyone in the Fruit Share when we know for sure.
