So I know it's super hot these days, but I'd like to remind everyone that the Spring was super cold. It's an odd juxtaposition, and it's caused some weird maturity rates in our crops (some crops planted 2 weeks apart being harvested at the same time, etc.). But the Summer crops also had to live through those cold days, too. So they are still not quite mature, but hopefully will be soon!
We are getting into the hardest days of the growing season. With everything growing fast- crops, weeds, bugs, fungus, you name it. So keeping up harvesting plus taking care of everything else becomes a big challenge. I know I'm pretty tired and have been falling asleep before 9pm every day the last week. Farm work sometimes gets confused with gardening. They are not the same. Gardening is something people can do for relaxation at their own pace. Farming is the opposite. It is a job that is physically taxing and demanding, and requires skill and quick decision making. Yes, there are entry level positions in farming that can be trained to new workers, just like a lot of skilled jobs. But not just anyone can step in and do what a seasoned farmer can do.
So stay cool this week and enjoy your time as work work our butts off ;)
This week's share will include cucumbers, squashes, fresh onions, scallions, beets, carrots, salad turnips, radicchio, fennel, broccolini, cauliflower, kale, chard, cabbage, and head lettuce.
The Fruit Share will be cherries!
