Woohoo...the farm is refreshed, caught up, and ready for everyone to come grab their vegetables this week. We're hoping everyone with school-age kids were able to focus on a successful first week of school, and everyone else got to enjoy their short week. We had a short week as a farm crew as well!
As we described in the emails we sent out last season when everyone was renewing their shares, we wanted to protect our farm crew members and give them the holiday off that they deserve. It's also the meteorological start of fall (not the astronomical...that's September 22nd and the actual end of Summer predicted by the Earth's relationship to the sun), which is based on temperatures. We see a shift in the light during the late afternoon hours, and a shift in plant growth. It also signals a shift in the farm's mindset...we need to start thinking about the Fall and most of all the Winter right now. So catching up on projects to make sure crops get in the ground at the right time is very important. Tunnels are turning, and fields are getting cleaned up!
So now that we've taken a collective gathering step, it's time to get back to it. The U-Pick fields are still open and will be for a couple more weeks. Don't forget to look for the new herb signs for basil, dill, and cilantro. Plus there are some amazing blooms still out in the flowers even though the sunflowers have peaked.
*REMEMBER* we are signing up the WINTER SHARE!! right now. We currently have 35 spots left, so make sure to bring your payment with you this week to sign up. And we got some fun stuff in the works for this share..soon to be revealed ;) So don't forget!
Now for this week's share. I have to say that there is something a member said to me last week when they were heading to the U-Pick that upset me. So I want to make this clear: no one paid for a share during our "off week". Everyone pays for the share weeks that we distribute vegetables. This was explained in the renewal emails sent last year (and posted in the thumbnail to this post). Keeping the U-Pick fields open during our "off week" was a gift to you. You are welcome.
So, the first share of the meteorological start of Fall will include: Spaghetti Squash, potatoes, eggplant, peppers of all kinds!, carrots, beets, zucchini and summer squash, cucumbers, onions, kale, onions, bok choi, salad radishes, more Fall squashes, tomatoes, and head lettuce. The time to put up your tomatoes for the year is now!!! And we got plenty available in the share room. People have also been buying potatoes, peppers, and onions in bulk, too, so if you need anything just ask :)
