The official first day of Winter is December 21st this year, but this week is feeling like it might just be here for good. Luckily the weather at the beginning of last week was so nice we were able to harvest all the rest of all that broccoli I was talking about. Broccoli in December is such a treat! We also have loads of leafy greens, which might be what you are searching for after your Thanksgiving feast.
We are entering a time of year when we finally get to take a breath after quite a stressful season. It was probably our driest season yet as Root Down Farm. It's almost like we are trauma bonded to our produce. I know that might sound a little silly, but when you put allllllllll the time we did into growing, and then you have a harvest to literally show the fruits of your labor and expertise it becomes emotional for us. All of the vegetables, melons, herbs, and cut flowers that were and are in our shares this season were grown by us (regardless of what container or bag we decide to store or sell them in). Anything we don't grow, like the fruit in the fruit share and apples and pears that show up in the Winter Share, are always labeled with where they are from.
This week's Winter Share will include- potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, broccoli, radishes, turnips, squashes, kale, bunched greens, bok choy, celeriac, fennel, radicchio, head lettuce, leeks, and more...all grown by us!
