Summer Share #16 of 20: 9/22+9/24- Bag It Up!

The season has taken a turn with the seasons and Fall will be here on Tuesday this week. What a wonderful time of year. We have worked so hard for everything this season. The weather extremes and the increased, concentrated deer population has just been mind blowing this season. We have been trying since March to get a deer fence put in, and the materials have finally just arrived. We are gonna have to look for relief next season.

Sometimes we joke that farming is just moving things from one spot to another. We take these seeds and put them in the soil there. And then we take what has grown and put it in a good place to cure, and then we pick it up again to clean it and put it in a bag. Then we pick up the bag and pour it into a bin for you to then pick up. It's a funny way of looking at things, but is there a better way to move SOOOOO much produce on a small farm? Of course we use tractors for big bins and big stacks of bags when we can and specifically with crops that need to be harvested all at once (looking at you winter squash, onions, and potatoes ;)

What vessel is better than a bag to move produce in? Seriously I am asking. Members walk into the share room with their own bags, we hand people bags and then people even grab a paper bag to put their potatoes in, to then put in their share bag. Of course there are containers made of cardboard or plastic, but carrying large amounts of produce in them can be cumbersome. The bag lets you walk erect and does not obstruct your view when moving around. What a wonderful way to move and store your vegetables!

This week's share will include potatoes, squashes, cucumbers, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, beets, bok choy, fennel, peppers, eggplant, onions, kale, tomatoes, and head lettuce!

The fruit share will include organic raspberries, apples, peaches, plums, and pears!
