Summer Share #13 of 20- 8/27+8/29 A Lot of Info

Yikes! Things have been busy on the farm and sometimes the blog gets put on the back burner. So thank you to everyone hanging in there and checking the website for updates like these:

  1. We will be signing current members up for our Winter Share starting this week. It's easy to sign up, just bring your payment of cash or check with you to your regular pick up this week and let us know you want a Winter Share. It's that easy (more information in the email we sent to everyone)

  2. The farm crew takes Labor Day off, as it is our Holiday after all. This means we will not have share distribution the week of Labor Day. It also coincides with the start of school and many people's last Summer vacations. So, we will have the UPick fields open during regular share hours, but there will not be any vegetables to pick up in the share room. More info in the email we sent out to everyone.

This time of year always marks a big shift in family routines, lifestyles, and even growth in the fields. The days are noticeably shorter, the pesky pests are even waning as well as the growth rate of weeds. It's really a big sigh of relief once Labor Day arrives, so being able to relax a bit this week after going full out since the beginning of May is needed to avoid major burnout.

Last week we hosted both the Niagara County CCE Annual Meeting in our fields as well as The Good Farmers Guild Annual Tomato Tasting Party. It was a lot of fun to be able to talk so much technical talk about vegetables, plant diseases, farm systems, the weather (of course), plant varieties and more with other farmers. Sometimes it feels like they are the only ones who understand how demanding this work is (and how much of a gift it is to the public).

This week's share, before we take the break, will include: potatoes, summer and fall squashes, carrots, beets, onions, peppers, eggplant, celery, melons, kale, chard, head lettuce, cabbage, and tomatoes of course.

The fruit share will include peaches, nectarines, and plums.

Three Sisters Farm will be here for the first time this Summer with chicken and eggs for sale. Bring all your questions with you and ask them when you see them.

And of course The Savage Wheat Project will be here too!
